Whaling

WhalingFirst Phishing, now Whaling. What is it and how can attacks be prevented?

Whaling is a term used for emails sent with the specific intention of tricking staff into transferring money outside the business or in some cases to gain confidential HR or Tax information.

We ourselves have seen several examples in recent weeks as cyber criminals change their tactics to get around traditional email security solutions. Recent high profile cases include Seagate and Snapchat who inadvertently gave up employees’ personal information. Typically, a scammer will use a spoof email address to pose as a company CEO, Finance Director or Managing Director to send an email requesting a fund transfer to an external bank account. This form of attack is estimated to have generated over 800 million dollars is the last 6 months alone and is set to increase rapidly as more and more companies fall victim to these invasions.

Employee education and water tight internal processes play an important role but there are other solutions available to help combat these attacks.
